"Mercy of the Staff"
16 x 20”
Acrylic on Canvas
Apr. 2026$350
As I watch the sun set
I await the winds of change,
Guided by staff in sand.
Will I find peace or penance
When the morning comes?
What’s left? What’s left.
This piece explores personal change, loss and the journey of finding a direction to move in afterward. When I learned of the Migration Story of the Choctaw and Chickasaw ancestral tribes, I wondered how they must have felt. So much unknown ahead of them in trying to find home again, a new way of being. I also think of the doubt that must have filled them, putting their trust in the sacred leaning pole, which could lead them further into the fearful unknown or put an end to their long journey. And when they did arrive, what kind of life would be waiting? Would it have been worth everything? Would the staff offer guidance or deliver punishment? Regardless, there is no turning back to the way things were. The only way is forward.
